In 1854, Alliance was founded by the merging of three small communities called Williamsport, Freedom, and Liberty. A fourth community, Mount Union, was added to the group in 1888. Alliance was officially incorporated in 1889. It is believed that the city was named Alliance as an alliance was formed between the small communities to create a larger entity. Others believe that the name reflects the intersection of two major railroad lines, the Cleveland and Wellsville Railroad and the Ohio and Pennsylvania Railroad, in Alliance.
For much of the 20th century, the center of activity revolved around the train station, as it was the cityās main transportation hub. The railroad played a vital role in the cityās ability to transport materials in and out of town.
A small town with big town amenities, Alliance is located approximately 20 miles from Canton and 35 miles of Akron. While residents may access nearby cities and the attractions therein, it hosts a myriad of amenities and community events. Alliance is home to 24 parks encompassing 224 acres of land. Silver Park is the site of many community gatherings, including a fireworks show on the Fourth of July and a lighting event during the holiday season. Other parks include Butler Rodman Park, Freedom Square, Thompson-Snodgrass Park, Mount Union College Historic Park, and more. The Beech Creek Botanical Garden & Nature Preserve is located in Alliance as well.
The downtown district of Alliance hosts multiple historical buildings and is the site for a summer farmersā market, concerts, and various arts programs. Alliance is nicknamed The Carnation City, and the town celebrates the state flower of Ohio with a Carnation Festival every August since 1960.
